SFL HONOURS ASSOCIATION PRESIDENT
At the SFL Presentation Night, SFLUA President Peter Martin was presented with the "Tony Troon Achiever of the Year Trophy" for outstanding contributions to and achievements in the Southern Football League.
Peter started with the SESFLUA in 1979 and quickly established himself as an active contributor to Association affairs. He held the role of Secretary for four years and that of Treasurer for another four years, has been the recipient of a Best Clubman Award, a "Most Determined Trophy" and was involved in guiding the Association through the incorporation process, including drafting the initial constitution, as well as keeping its finances under control over some lean years in the 1980s.
The committees he sat on during those years laid the foundation for the strong association we have today, and it is testament to his dedication to the SFLUA that he has maintained such an active involvement to this day, stepping back on to the committee as Secretary in 2008 and now President in 2009 and re-elected for 2010. A short break, which saw him umpire a season in the WRFL, didn’t stop him from being involved again on his return – and even in his absence!
He has been a valuable mentor to a number of SFLUA presidents, even when not holding an official position, and has forged strong relationships with many players, and club and league representatives alike. Notching up 600 games this year is a tremendous achievement, and something he should be duly proud of – as should he be of the job he has done as President of the association in 2009. He capped off a tremendous season with his very first Grand Final appointment, and is backing up to go again in 2010 for his 32nd year in the SFL.
In his acceptance speech, Peter acknowledged the excellent work of the 2009 Committee and stated that he saw the award as recognition by the SFL of the excellent efforts of ALL SFL Umpires.
